Splash! the Ghannis D

While aboard the Blue-O-Two Clean Up safari, Blue Eye FX took the opportunity to film Sara Campbell (when she wasn’t busy cleaning up the Red Sea reefs!) on one of the fantastic wrecks to be found on Sha'ab Abu Nuhâs – the Ghannis D.
The wreck of the Ghannis D lies on the north reef of Sha'ab Abu Nuhâs. She was probably built by a Japanese shipyard and originally named the Shoyo Maru. She was then sold and repurchased by many different ship owners. At her bow, her different names appear as the many layers of paint erode away – in her second-to-last incarnation she was know as Markos, then Ghannis D. The ‘D’ in her name is the initial of the Greek naval company Danae.
The wreck of the Ghannis D on the April 19, 1983 remains a complete myst
ery. She left from Rijeka heading for Hoeida (on the Yemen cost of the Red Sea) and hit the reef of Sha'ab Abu Nuhâs.
The Ghannis D proved to be a perfect site for Sara to freedive. The film crew enjoyed awesome visibility on the shoot and the ship’s bow lies in just ten metres of water, while her stern is the deepest section of the wreck at 27 metres. The funnel marked with the big ‘D’ remains in perfect condition. At the foot of the funnel is the access to the engine room that is in a remarkably preserved state. While the central portion of the wreck is a ruin, it is the best place to find crocodilefish and stonefish. Divers can see the main winch and the front mast that remains in place and the mooring chains lead to the anchors lying on the seabed (she was anchored in when wrecked).
Sara discovered a new passion – freediving wrecks! Check out Splash on www.underwaterchannel.tv to see the show.
